With such a crazy year behind us, there are high expectations for 2021 and what it will bring. The BOWLZILLA Gold Coast skateboarding festival will be doing its part in bringing back the positive, and Yeah Girl is jumping in the mix once again with our annual skate session and a new skate photography workshop.
For the sixth year BOWLZILLA Gold Coast is the ASF National Park Skating Championships, which makes it the peak ASF park skating competition with the highest prize money in Australia. The competition is going down at Elanora Skatepark on Saturday, March 13th. There will be an equal prize purse across the Yeah Girl Womxn’s and Dickies Open, plus the largest Masters prize purse in Australasia and an oversupply of prizes for 16 & Under.
But of course, it’s not just about the competition. The BOWLZILLA Gold Coast festival is about the gathering of Australia’s skateboarding community for a week on the Gold Coast to celebrate all that makes them great, including art, music, food, friends, community and skating.
To kick things off, we’re teaming up with Gold Coast Skateboard Coaching for our Yeah Girl Skate Session at Tugun Skatepark on March 9th. This is a free all ages and abilities event for non-cisgender male skaters, including women, trans, non-binary and/or gender non-conforming. To register a spot send us an email with your name and we’ll add you to the list — but be quick because spaces are limited!
We believe that the more non-traditional skateboarders we have creating media and working behind the scenes, the closer we’ll get to true equality in the industry, so we’re passing on the knowledge to empower a new wave of skate photographers.
On Thursday, March 11th from 6-8pm Yeah Girl is hosting a skate photography workshop at Level Up Studio + Gallery where we’ll pass on tips and tricks from behind the lens. The workshop is for womxn, non-binary, non-cis males 15 years old and up who are passionate about skateboarding and want to learn how to capture it. We’ll cover things like composition, how to capture the context of a trick, basic technical skills, photographing a skate event, communicating with skateboarders you’re shooting, how to get your work published, and more!
Dinner is on the house thanks to Beach Burrito Co. and all participants will have the opportunity to reserve a media pass for the BOWLZILLA contest on the Saturday so they can put their new knowledge and skills to the test.
Spaces are extremely limited so hit this link now to register your interest!
Saturday, March 13th, is the main event with the BOWLZILLA Gold Coast 2021 ASF Park Skating Championships going down at Elanora Skatepark. This is the highest paid equality in skateboarding event in Australia with equal prize money for both the Dickies Open and the Yeah Girl Womxn’s divisions.
Then to top it all off Yeah Girl presents the official BOWLZILLA after party at Beach Burrito Co. in Coolangatta, where we’ll let loose with live music, art and excellent company. More details on that soon!
